Mountain trekking

Info about trekking Mount Rinjani

Trekking to the peak of the active volcano, Mt. Rinjani,Lombok,West Nusa Tenggara located just about 30 minutes flight from Bali.

Mt Rinjani is one of the largest mountains in Indonesia. On a clear day you can see breathtaking views from the summit. There is a crater lake, Segara Anak and a natural hot spring there.

Please visit our trekking site to see our different Rinjani Horizon Trekking Itineraries.

The trek usually takes about three days. At 3,726 m, Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia, second only to Mount Kerinci on Sumatra, and it dominates the landscape of the relatively small island of Lombok. Within its huge 50 km² caldera sits the crater lake Segara Anak (Child of the Sea). Eruptions within the caldera have formed a new small cone called appropriately enough, Gunung Baru (New Mountain). The mountain and its satellites form the Mount Rinjani National Park (Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani) – officially 41,000 hectares within the park boundaries and a further 66,000 hectares of protected forest outside.

Restaurant

The Horizon offers the best food on the mountain. But we would say that wouldn’t we? We happen to think it’s true though!

We encourage you to be adventurous with the food. We encourage you to try the regional menu – just ask the staff and they’ll happily prepare and serve you some wonderful regional cuisine cooked the way it’s done for the locals. Some of it can be quite spicy so be sure to let them know if you’re not a fan of chilli, most of the dishes can be adjusted to mild – but if you are a fan of chilli, you’ll love what’s on offer.

The tempeh and tofu (soya bean cake and curd) is prepared simply and tastes great. Have it with greens (picked fresh from the garden) for a light but filling meal.

Local vegetables include spinach, lettuce, snake beans, kangkung (water spinach), potatoes, sweet potatoes, casava, corn and carrots. These are cooked in a variety of ways, all delicious and suitable as an accompaniment or on their own with rice.

Baked chicken with rice is another favourite. Spicy and simple.

The Horizon does have a western menu and you’ll find toasted sandwiches, and other favourites but we strongly recommend sampling the local food – after all it’s what they are best at making.

Villa

Our simple and comfortable villa is one of the few such accommodation types in the village. It comprises two bedrooms that can be rented out individually or together.

The master bedroom has spectacular mountain and valley views. Adjacent to the bedroom is a comfortable living room and bathroom.

Each room has it’s own bathroom with shower or traditional bath facilities. Please note there is no hot water in the bathrooms but our staff can prepare a hot water mandi (or traditional bath) if you prefer.

Food can be ordered from the restaurant and consumed in the villa if you don’t feel like eating out.

You can either relax in the villa or undertake a range of activities available in the village including soft trekking, visiting a traditional Lombok village, or the traditional mosque in neighbouring Bayan.

Many people stay in the villa in preparation for their climb of Mr Rinjani. We are more than happy to accommodate you for this purpose and we can arrange all of your mountain trekking needs too.
